Hagley - The Butty

Owned by: Andrew Bolt, Robert Brown, Ben Jameson & Richard Fairhurst

Welcome to the web site devoted to the restoration of the "Big Ricky" Hagley.

This site describes the finding and restoration of the "Big Ricky" Hagley together with her history.

Hagley is a 72' wooden canal boat built for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company by Walker's of Rickmansworth in 1937. Originally built as a butty, Hagley had no engine and was originally paired with a motor boat, Hadley.

Hagley is carvel built with oak sides and a flat bottom of elm. Planking is over iron frames on the straight sides with oak frames at the bow and stern to give extra shaping. Hagley was designed with deep sides to carry boxed cargo from the Thames.

When we were given Hagley she had been used for many years as a houseboat on the Basingstoke Canal. She was then deconverted and was lying as a bare hull by Scotland Road Bridge. She was barely floating and needed immediate docking and an extensive programme of restoration.
